When, way back in 1972, Malta changed its currency from the old pounds, shillings and pence to the decimal Malta Lira system, the government in those days made sure that each citizen had a handy “reckoner” so that a quick, precise and just understanding could be grasped by all concerned.
It helped the local economy tremendously, in the sense that no hidden price hikes would ensue and everyone could easily understand the value of the new currency at a glance.
This reckoner was exact to the decimal points (mils) and cents, and I remember there was a table that showed the value in cents of the old 240 pence, and vice versa.
There is no similar table in the “Euro to Maltese Lira Conversions” booklet. One cannot see, for example, the equivalent of 4c in Euro centimes… or for that matter 27c, 33c, 44c, 56c, 67c, 79c, 88c or 91c, etc. Instead, there is a table showing only some of the centime values in groups of five and 10.
The table is a very poor effort and can give rise to speculation. Without any doubt there will be an increase in the cost of living when Malta introduces the Euro next year, and with this booklet that increase is almost certain to be accentuated.
How about a proper reckoner, which shows the exact conversion rate of all the cents in the Maltese Lira? Philip Pace
