Labour’s central office is fuming at the fact that it was left in the dark about an invitation to former finance minister John Dalli, who will be the main speaker at the Zebbug Labour Party club this morning at 10.30am.
Dalli’s decision to accept the invitation has caused panic at both the PN headquarters in Pietà and Labour’s offices at Mile End, where top party officials were caught wrong-footed by the announcement.
MaltaToday can reveal that the MLP central office was not at all happy with the event organised by Alfred Grixti, a party delegate close to deputy leader Michael Falzon.
The former Nationalist heavyweight, who was finance minister for over 10 years, and who resigned under ignominious circumstances in 2005, will be interviewed by Frans Ghirxi, the editor of the GWU newspaper L-Orizzont.
But central office fears that the whole affair could turn into a PR disaster. So much so, that they have refused to advertise this event.
Ghirxi is expected to ask Dalli about his present status and relationship with the Prime Minister and the party. Dalli has often expressed exasperation at the way he was sidelined and treated by the party and the PN media since his resignation three years ago.
Nevertheless, he has made it clear that he will be standing in two districts, and is still interested in a political comeback.
On the other hand, officials at Mile End are aware that, while Dalli has been critical of the PN, he will be very careful not to play into anyone’s hands.
And to add to their concerns, Dalli’s attendance at the Zebbug Party Club today is expected to overshadow Alfred Sant’s meeting, which will be held under the tent at Pjazza Nicolo Isouard, Mosta.
