Many of the participants in the present debate about spring hunting and trapping seem to be taking some comfort in the thought it would take the EU several years before it could bring financial sanctions to bear against Malta. It would be ill-advised to bet on that. The fact is that the EU Commission could impose monetary penalties on Malta at virtually one day’s notice without having to go through any complicated, time-consuming court processes. Malta has currently lodged applications for EU financial support for a very wide range of projects. All the Commission needs to do is to put such applications at the back of the queue. As a “for instance” I have learned from former colleagues that several MEPs have already been lobbied to put Malta’s formal application to join the Eurozone on the back burner, on the basis that Brussels should take Malta seriously only when Malta takes its EU obligations seriously.
