Charged with raping nephew, niece
A 52-year-old man was remanded in custody after being accused of violently raping a nephew and a niece under the age of 12. He was also charged with defiling the same two children and another neice.
Contraband cigarettes seized
Customs officers seized large quantities of contraband tobacco and alcohol from a hawker in Rabat. According to a customs official an estimated Lm18,000 in tax had not been paid on the items seized.

Malta marked May Day and the third anniversary since European Union accession. While Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi addressed a national conference about work, Labour Leader Alfred Sant addressed a mass meeting in Valletta.

New paid parking system in Valletta
Motorists entering Valletta started to pay to enter and park in Valletta. The system gave a breath of fresh air to Malta’s capital city, however caused distress to motorists who found it rather difficult to find space to park in the free park and ride designated areas.
L-Ispjun – Endemol saga in court
A court revoked part of a decree it had given earlier in the day, allowing the screening of the final episode of the reality show ‘L-Ispjun’ in TVM. Dutch media giants Endemol are suing local producers Watermelon over copyright infringement.
PM in dialogue on environment
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi discussed issues related to environment in his second dialogue meeting with the general public at Castile in preparation for the pre-Budget document expected to be published before summer.

John Cassar White resigns, but…
Malta Shipyard’s chairman John Cassar White retracted his voluntary resignation after government did not accept it. Cassar White said he was resigning following a report in Malta Today Midweek that revealed he was an advisor to Labour Leader Alfred Sant.
Olivia leaves for Helsinki
Olivia Lewis, Malta’s ambassador to this year’s edition of Eurovision left Malta for Helsinki where she is to participate in the qualifying round to the final night with her song Vertigo composed by Philip Vella and written by Gerrard-James Borg.

Police shoot and kill man
Sebastian Borg, 52 of Qormi was shot and killed by police officers in a dramatic shooting that followed a violent pursuit. A magisterial inquiry is under way.
Worker injured in Qawra
A 55 year-old worker had a narrow escape in yet another construction related incident. A large section of a building collapsed onto the cabin of a crane he was operating.

Three charged with pimping
Three men were remanded in custody after being charged with living off earnings from prostitution. Christian Grech, 25 from St Paul’s Bay, Charles Aquilina, 37 from Fgura and David Zerafa, 35 from Gharghur, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
