Driver jailed for three years
Antonie Cassar, 23 of Zurrieq was jailed for three years and his driving license suspended for five years after a Magistrates Court found him guilty of involontary manslaughter, being found responsible for the deaths of five youths in a horrific traffic accident in Zebbug in October 2005.

Hawkers in protest march
Monti hawkers marched through Republic Street in Valletta in protest for governments decision to move them from Merchants Street to St. James Ditch. The hawkers were mobilised by the UHM who is supporting their cause.
Sarkozy in Gozo, Comino
French President-elect Nicolas Sarkozy swam in picturesque surroundings in Gozo’s Mgarr ix-Xini and Santa Marija Bay in Comino while he was also spotted jogging near St. Peter’s Pool close to Delimara.

Vandals ruin 3,000 trees in Mellieha
Almost 3,000 pine saplings were destroyed by vandals beneath the Red Tower in Mellieha causing widespread condemnation.
Sarkozy leaves Malta
French President-elect Nicolas Sarkozy returned to Paris after three days of private holidays in Malta. He commented to the media after a jog in Delimara that “Malta was fantastic.”

Government closes Spring hunting
Government ordered the immediate closure of the Spring hunting season in a move to definitely halt illegal hunting. Speaking to the media, Environment Minister George Pullicino said that following consultation with the Prime Minister, the season was declared closed after repeated incidents of shooting on protected birds the day before.
Olivia Lewis eliminated
Olivia Lewis, Malta’s entry to the Eurovision song contest in Helsinki did not qualify to the final competion night on Saturday. This is the first time that Malta will not be among the 24 countries competing in the finals.

UHM files protest
UHM on behalf of 115 Monti hawkers filed a judicial protest in court against government claiming the decision to move the Monti from Merchants Street in Valletta to St. James Ditch as illegal.
Saturday, May 12
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi announced the setting up of a nature and history park in the northwest of Malta. The park will be managed by two NGOs namely Din l-Art Helwa and Nature Trust who have signed a letter of intent with the government.
