Plans submitted to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority show that the new gate proposed by the landowners of the picturesque Munxar coastline in Marsaskala will guarantee public access.
Access to the Munxar coastline was previously blocked after an illegal wall was built in 2005, leading to protests from the Ramblers Association. The illegal wall was removed by the owners after a MEPA enforcement order.
Last week MaltaToday revealed that Rene Scicluna had applied for the relocation of the gate. The Ramblers Association warned that it would organise public protests if the new gate blocked access to pedestrians.
But the new gate proposed by the landowners includes a smaller gate which will be kept open for pedestrians to pass.
A consultant for the developer told MaltaToday that they are only proposing to relocate the gate because the alley leading to the existing gate is not suitable for modern machinery required for agricultural purposes.
But for the first time the developers are also guaranteeing public access, the consultant told MaltaToday. The developer also intends to reinstate rubble walls which fell in disrepair and clean the area which has served as a dumping ground for fridges and other appliances.
The Ramblers Association is still studying the plans. But association president Lino Bugeja welcomed the “conciliatory tone” of the landowners.
