Don’t forsake Cospicua

Dione Schembri
Cospicua

I would like to comment on the article entitled “Two floors over Knights’ Barracks proposed for Dock 1” (22 July).
The initial idea of regenerating the harbour area was, and still is, definitely a good proposal for businesses and developments.
But I feel that priority should be given to integrating the Three Cities – Cospicua, Senglea and Vittoriosa – together. With the proposed buildings on the Knights Barracks, and even further onto the parking area and right under the Senglea bastions, this development is going to move farther away from the idea of integration.
Cospicua should not be excluded in any way from reaping all benefits of this whole development. The idea of further developing this area will only erect another huge barrier and indirect distinction between the three.
If the proposed building is not built and the area atop the Knights’ Barracks is integrated as a large terrace/gardens with the existent street level and parking area, it would automatically create an open space that overlooks the dock area, Vittoriosa, St Angelo and the yacht marina. This would give Cospicua residents and all visitors to the Senglea seafront a nice panorama of Dockyard Creek.
The present large parking area is proposed to be developed into an underground parking lot. Maybe the development of apartments on this underground parking area will be a good idea, having a nice open view of Vittoriosa.
The result is obvious: a large open space overlooking the harbour, Vittoriosa, St Angelo and the marina on top of the Knights Barracks.
The integration of Cospicua within the project and the amalgamation of the Three Cities should be the main objective. Safeguarding the parking area just before getting in through the Macina Tunnel will enhance the area even further. Parking space is being created by the underground construction and that should be enough if well planned.
Hopefully the architect in charge, or MEPA, will consider my humble suggestion.
