Is Libya really a friend of Malta? Do friends seek to harm each other?
Many of the Maltese citizens are asking these questions due to the oil exploration issue and the quantity of illegal migrant landings on our shore and the fitness of migrants after such a distance.
On foreign media it was reported that there are thousands of migrants ready to leave Libyan shore. The fact that migrants have arrived, and are still coming from 180 nautical miles undetected until they reach 50 to 60 nautical miles, which in my opinion gives confirmation that these are being escorted into the distress zone on propose.
It is also clear that the organisers do not care for the life of any of these migrants; these people are lured into these boats asserted that they will soon have someone to meet them. It is also clear that a lot of money being pumped into the migrant’s transportation by someone who can afford it.
Most of these people did not have and do not have the means to pay for such a venture, yet from the continent of Africa they find our tiny island.
We also expect a dangerous nuclear power station to be built not far off in Libya.
I urge both the Government and the Opposition to give us leadership and have a common foreign policy on such issues. This is why many of us here in Malta are suspicious of Libyans friendship.
