MUT issue directives to primary school teachers

The Malta Union of Teachers has ordered an industrial action across the primary sector because of the way the weekly 1.5-hour curricular development session (CDS) is being implemented.
The union said it had been protesting for a whole year the implementation of the CDS because it was not carried out according to the reform agreement. The union said CDS required an adequate complement of peripatetic teachers and other supply full-time or part-time teachers and also relief teachers.
The MUT instructed primary class teachers not to draw up agendas or write minutes for CDS; peripatetic teachers who were not being given the 1.5 hours en bloc for CDS to take their 1.5 hour session on Fridays during the last 1.5 hours, and to receive time-table instructions based upon curricular exigencies; and complementary teachers not to take whole primary school classes.
The MUT there had been no further recruitment in the primary sector which would have allowed an adequate coverage for the CDS. Without additional relief teachers, this led to an increased workload for primary teachers.
The MUT said it was concerned that the present situation was leading to frustration across all teachers in the primary sector and the current implementation of the CDS was defying its very scope.
