PL expresses concern on termination notices for government workers

The Labour Party has expressed serious concern over the treatment of employees at the Water Services Corporation, the Transport Authority, and the Housing Authority, over the termination of their employment.
The employees recently received a notice that their employment would be terminated, and instructing them to report to the Staff Development Office.
Labour deputy leader Anglu Farrugia said that in certain cases, employment had been terminated retroactively.
“Government’s unilateral decision, after having promised peace of mind in its electoral campaign, has sowed a lot of uncertainty among these families. It’s another case of two-faced politics,” Farrugia said.
“The PL feels the treatment of these workers is unacceptable and that the government is not setting an example as a model employer in industrial relations. This notwithstanding the interpretation of the EU directive on indefinite contracts for employees with more than four years working at these authorities.
“The PL is asking the government why this notice was not served before the general election, what type of work is being offered to these employees, what impact this will have on utility bills, and what impact this decision will have on the standard of living of the families of the workers affected. We will be following this situation closely,” Farrugia said.
