The Finance and Investments Ministry has rebutted media speculation over the future of the Crafts Village in Ta’ Qali, claiming that no shop owner will be forced to relocate to the new centre envisaged for Bormla’s Dock No. 1.
In a statement issued yesterday, Tonio Fenech explained that while the government’s intention was to develop an Art and Crafts centre in the former shipyard in Cottonera, this would not be done at the expense of the existing crafts village at Ta’ Qali.
The government is currently in talks with the shop owners’ representative union, the Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises (GRTU), to discuss various possibilities regarding the proposed rehabilitation of the area.
The results of these discussions are expected to be made public in the near future.
The minister also dismissed claims that European Union funds had been lost, pointing out that the Committee for the Evaluation of European Union Projects had given preference to the Biotechnology Park instead.
