Sister newspaper Illum’s Julia Farrugia was awarded the special prize in the fifth edition of the EU’s anti-discrimination press awards for her entry on the Roma.
Victor Vella from Union Print publications received the Journalist Award 2008. The For Diversity Against Discrimination journalist award competition, was organised in collaboration with European Youth Press and the Association of European Journalists.
Joanna Drake, Head of EC Representation Office in Malta, presented the certificates and prizes to Victor Vella and Julia Farrugia, in the presence of Anthony J. Tabone, National Correspondent for the FDAD campaign.
The winning articles were selected from among thirteen submissions entered by six Maltese journalists. Both articles are now competing for the respective European Journalist Award to be announced in 2009 from among the 27 EU member states.
An independent jury made up of media professionals and an anti-discrimination expert selected the winning entries. The jury panel was composed of Lawrence Grech, Claire Bonello, Edward Demicoli, Therese Spiteri and Anthony J. Tabone, as the National Correspondent for FDAD.
The Journalist Award is granted by the European Commission to journalists who contribute to a better public understanding of the benefits of diversity and the fight against discrimination in society.
The “For Diversity. Against Discrimination.” (FDAD) campaign is held across all 27 EU-Member States, including Malta. Initiated by the European Commission, the campaign aims to inform people about their rights and obligations under EU-wide anti-discrimination legislation.
