Housing Authority schemes on hold pending rent reform
Housing schemes from the Housing Authority have been put on hold for a revision, pending the debate on the Rent Reform Bill.
The social policy ministry yesterday said that in a bid to have a consistent policy, it had recommended the Housing Authority to review all its property schemes.
These include the Right To Buy scheme, which gives tenants living in government housing, the right to buy the property. The scheme was intended to take people off social assistance and help them to eventually become home-owners.
“All these schemes are being reviewed, so that when they are re-introduced they will truly reflect the present social needs.”
The minister appealed for the Opposition’s maturity on the issue, after Labour housing spokesman Roderick Galdes accused the government of stopping the scheme underhandedly without explaining its decision. “This situation created uncertainty among families that were planning to apply under the scheme since its removal has effectively denied them the right to buy the home they are living in,” Galdes said.
