More workers on four-day week The entire workforce of the company Stainless Steel were informed by management they will be working on a four-day week for the coming seven weeks, due to a diminishing export order book, particularly from the UK. The General Workers Union secretary for manufacturing, Joe Sammut, assured workers he would stay in contact with the management and monitor the state of the company. Sammut said he will keep workers updated with developments in the next seven weeks. Other workers were put on reduced hours and four-day weeks in factories such as Methode Electronics, which employs some 650 people. Methode was the second company to cut its working week, after Trelleborg, which manufactures ‘O’ rings for the automotive industry, went on a four-day week in October 2007. Another 80 employees from Methode’s subsidiary Hetronics were also put on a four-day week schedule. xx
