Manikata farmers support Nadur

It is with a heavy heart that the farmers of Manikata have decided to write this letter. It is just a short public note that the Koperattiva Rurali Manikata (KRM) Ltd. would like to publish in support of the Nadur farmers, whose fresh water springs are being put in peril because of a cemetery being developed outside the development zone, and whose approval by MEPA is indeed questionable.
Our cooperative would like to show solidarity with the Nadur farmers and would like to pass on the message to Martin Camilleri and his friends that we stand foursquare behind them.
We hope that both government and the Gozo Church acknowledge the mishap and retract.
We join Victor Galea, Marco Cremona, Joe Portelli and others in questioning the dubious way in which MEPA approved such a huge project in an ODZ regardless of its negative visual, environmental, agricultural and hydrological impacts.
We also question the Gozo church’s decision to invest in the burial of the dead regardless of its negative impact on the well-being of the living. And considering the pressing need we feel in our life for the Church’s guiding light, all this makes us really sad. We would like to know what is the opinion of the Gozo Church’s newly appointed Commission For The Environment on the matter. We would like to know whether when the going gets tough, this commission is there to stand up and be counted, very much like its Maltese counterpart to whom we the farmers of Manikata feel indebted for their open support when we really needed it.
We also hope that farmers’ associations, cooperatives and producer groups voice their support for the Nadur farmers in this time of need. It’s high time that agriculture and farmers get the respect they duly deserve.
