Unless the law has been drastically changed since I served on the council of the Malta Union of Teachers for some 15 years, the strength of any trade union in Malta should be known to the Registrar of Trade Unions if he is carrying out his duty diligently and regularly as demanded by law.
I agree with what Anna Mallia had to say (Storm in a teacup, 15 April) except for one point. It was not for the Malta Freeport to tell the Registrar of Trade Unions what he had to do. The Registrar should know his duty, and it was for the Minister to whom he is accountable to ensure that this officer was ready to carry out his duty when required to do this.
No genuine trade unionist would use the workers he claims to represent as pawns in a power struggle with another trade union, casually involving the employer and the nation in the process.
