Local council governance

It is widely believed that local council governance can best express the true interest of its local members if: (1) members are given more rights to initiate regulations and by-laws themselves; (2) members are able to decide themselves for their areas within the parameters of the law, and; (3) regular consultative meetings are frequently held where the people’s aspirations are aired and actively discussed.
Far-reaching as it may seem, the idea of interactive television to enable citizens to watch local council debates and at the same time engage them in voting without ever leaving their homes, is an idea which I received from a Sliema voter who believes in true participation of the general public.
Popular participation should continue to be the life-blood of local governance. Through fresh ideas and useful amendments to existing legislation, I humbly believe the Nationalist Government will once again act as a catalyst in improving our Local Council’s Goverance.
