Swine flu - Air Malta takes precautionary health measures

An Air Malta aircraft operating the London Gatwick – Catania route was yesterday delayed for two hours 50 minutes at Catania Airport.
The delay was a result of a health procedure including disinfestations of the aircraft carried out by the airline in cooperation with the Sicilian health authorities after two Italian passengers travelling back home after a visit in the United Kingdom, were reported sick during the flight.
After the finalisation of the disinfestation process the aircraft continued with its schedule and operated the Catania-Munich service.
The Italian passengers were medically examined by the Sicilian medical authorities, and following laboratory tests in Palermo, it has now been confirmed that these passengers were suffering from the H1N1 virus.
Although the Air Malta operating crew do not have flu symptoms, the Sicilian Health authorities had requested that the crew are to remain in Catania until the examination tests of these passengers are issued. During the past hours, Air Malta was in constant contact with the Maltese Health authorities who jointly coordinated the repatriation of the operating crew. Maltese Health authorities will be assisting the crew in providing the necessary advice on their return to Malta.
Air Malta’s policy is to safeguard at all times the health and safety of its passengers and crews and this event reconfirms its commitment.
