Public recreation includes barbecues

Zminijietna – Voice of the Left expresses its disagreement to the bye-laws suggested by the Mellieha Local Council to stop barbeques and camps at Ghadira Bay.
Public beaches should serve as a recreation area for public use. Its ironic that the local council, which is there for the public, is proposing that the public should be allowed less space for recreation, especially in times of increasing cost of living. If some people pollute beaches in such activities, there should be more bins catering for charcoal residual and more enforcement from environmental wardens, whose service is quite scarce in Malta .’
It would be better if the Mellieha Local Council took clear positions on developments which are raising eyebrows. These include the development of hotels near the coast, and the proposal of Ghadira road, which lacks any scientific study to back it up.
Zminijietna also asks where the Mellieha Local Council was, when the valley at Mellieha was being destroyed?
Embellishment of public spaces should not lead to privatization and less public access.
