82-year-old is first swine flu casualty

An 82-year-old woman died on Monday evening of complications resulting from the A(H1N1) influenza, or swine flu.
The woman died in Mater Dei hospital after having admitted there, together with other vulnerable patients who were suffering from chronic heart sickness and other respiratory sicknesses.
The woman was admitted last Friday and received the necessary care at MDH, a government statement read. “Unfortunately, due to her chronic conditions, complications arose and the woman died during the night.”
The government statement specified that deaths arose from any influenza, especially when it is contracted by vulnerable people.
These people include those with heart, kidney and respiratory problems, pregnant women, children under five years of age, diabetics, people with suppressed immuno levels, and those with flu and who have experienced complications.
The secretariat for the elderly and community care reminded the general public to take care of their personal hygiene by washing their hands frequently, and to stay home and call their doctor if they have the flu.
The Pandemic Committee can be contacted on 21324086 or via email on disease.surveillance@gov.mt. More information on the flu is available on www.gov.mt and www.doi.gov.mt, while the secretariat for health has its own Youtube channel on www.youtube.com/segretarjat, and also a Facebook group: ‘Segretarjat Parlamentari għall-Anzjani u Kura fil-Komunita’.
