MMA investigating fire onboard Maltese ship

The Malta Maritime Authority (MMA) is investigating a fire onboard the Malta registered passenger ship Zenith, that happened on 18 August at the port of Firhamnen in Stockholm, while most of the passengers were on shore excursions.
As a precautionary measure the master ordered the evacuation of all passengers and non-essential crew members.
The Merchant Shipping Directorate has now been informed that the situation is under control. Two crew members have been treated for smoke inhalation at the local hospital.
The 1992-built 47,413 GT passenger ship Zenith reportedly sustained a fire late in the afternoon. Initial reports indicate that dense smoke was seen at the lower forward part of the ship where maintenance was being carried out. Fire fighting operations by the crew members, with the assistance of local firemen were carried out.
Initial assessments indicate that the ship’s condition is stable.
MMA Merchant Shipping Directorate officials are liaising with the Swedish Accident Investigation Board in their investigation of the accident. Constant contact is also being maintained with the operators of the ship.
The ship’s classification society will be attending the ship to verify its seaworthiness.
