Handling cases of veterinary abuse

Reference is being made to the letters entitled ‘Veterinary Abuse’ which were published on the MaltaToday of Sunday, 23 August.
I would like to point out to Ms. J. Pullicino that the Emergency Call Centre is run by the Malta Veterinary Association, thus any queries regarding this service should be addressed to them. At the moment, the Animal Welfare Directorate is in the process of building a 24-hour Animal After Care Centre in Ta’ Qali, where stray animals in need of medical attention can be taken to and treated free of charge.
With reference to Mr Adrian Aquilina’s letter, kindly note that the Animal Welfare situation in Malta has improved significantly in the past few months, as evidenced by the numerous court cases instituted recently. The Animal Welfare Directorate is continuously investigating any reports of animal abuse and the utmost is being done to provide all the services which are necessary to safeguard the interests of live animals. The issue relating to dead pets namely Pet Cremation and Pet Cemeteries is not a priority for now but the setting of Animal Welfare firmly on the agenda is.
Also, the Emergency Call Centre is a private service which does not fall under the Animal Welfare Directorate but is run by the Malta Veterinary Association (MVA) which is a private entity. Any complaints or reports about a Veterinary Surgeon or a Veterinary Service should be addressed to the Veterinary Surgeons Council.
Cases of ill-treated animals can be reported at the Animal Welfare Directorate on 25905198 or 25905207.
