Maltese Curia and mobile phone masts

Kevin Papagiorcopolo, as the Curia communications officer, has implied via the local media that mobile base stations do not cause leukaemia nor, at that, any health hazard.
He even stated that if they do cause health hazards, the Curia will be at the forefront of the process of eliminating these mobile base stations.
What the Curia has not stated is that the Italian Environment Authority has decreed that the Vatican’s shortwave radio transmission tower emissions are responsible for an epidemic of leukaemia in children living in the surrounding suburbs.
The Vatican is now trying to downplay this incidence although statistically it is clear that incidence of leukaemia has increased six-fold.
Is the Curia’s behaviour/response in the local media linked to the fact that the Italian environment director has threatened to shut off the electrical power of the Vatican’s radio station unless changes are made?
Personally I do not see any issue with mobile phone masts being positioned on Church roofs. On the contrary I am in favour.
Since the negative effect of EMF (Microwave) radiation decreases with distance, the sheer fact that the mentioned masts have been placed upon such a large structure should imply that they have now been rendered hazard-free, provided that the EU resolution as to transmission power is honoured.
Is the Curia of Malta willing to be at the forefront of the issue by pushing forward this concept?
