Traffic lights too expensive for Swieqi council

A potential hazard for pedestrians in Ibragg road, opposite the Halland Hotel will stand because the council said it cannot afford the €4,000 needed for a pedestrian crossing.
Presently pedestrians have to walk along the main road and the adjacent car park and bus stop, because the pavement is blocked by the protruding façade of a residence.
The Malta Transport Authority has already approved the creation of the pedestrian crossing. But on 1 September, the council voted down the proposal, citing the high costs involved: “We are not saying we are not interested in the project which will be done at a later stage. But at the moment we have to assess our financial position,” the Swieqi mayor told MaltaToday.
According to the mayor the installation of lights will cost the council a staggering €4,000. But residents speaking to this newspaper are furious at the council’s decision not to allocate funds immediately for the project. “Is €4,000 too dear to protect pedestrians?” a resident asked.
