Unfair label for Cottonera residents

I refer to the article ‘631 arraigned on long-term school truancy’, which appeared in the MaltaToday of Sunday 15 November, 2009. Reading it left me with an uneasy feeling. The article appears to be simply reporting bare facts – and what could be wrong by merely reporting the facts, one would say?
Highlighting negative situations through the summing up of a number of wrongs, whilst factual, do nothing to analyse, let alone change the issue at hand. Of course, the responsible departments in ministries should be urged to take appropriate action; the bare publishing of these facts does not help to improve the situation at all.
Articles about something or other that is “off” in the Cottonera area appear with a certain regularity in the press. However, these only serve to strengthen the view of many people that nothing good goes on in, or comes out of Cottonera and Cospicua in particular.
The majority of people in Cottonera work hard, send their children to school and help them wherever possible and needed, just like everyone else. It is unfair that they are almost continuously placed in the box labeled ‘welfare dependents’ and/or ‘parents who couldn’t care less about their children’s wellbeing and education.’
