UN index reveals gaping gender gap in salaries

On average men are paid over €10,000 more than women: HDI

Malta slipped three places down to 38 in the Human Development Index, the United Nations’ index on development, gender participation and empowerment, and poverty.
The country still retains a position in the category of “very high human development”, but flounders when it comes to gender empowerment measures.
The 2009 report, which this year dealt with the issue of human migration, revealed that some €27 million in remittances, foreign investment official development aid flowed out of Malta into other countries.
The country retained a respectable rank in the gender-related development index at 32, with women and men enjoying roughly similar life expectancy and literacy rates.
However, a gulf in the estimated income between men and women was startling: men receive an estimated €21,000 annual income compared to women’s €9,800 on average.
The island ranked far lower in its gender empowerment measure index, at 74 – totally out of synch with its other rankings in human development. The main components of this index were Malta’s low six women MPs out of 69 and an estimated 19% of women in the population of legislators, senior officials and managers.
