Double weights and double measures

I’m saddened at seeing how Malta’s rural landscape got permanently ruined by building speculation. However, I’m equally saddened by Lino Bugeja’s deliberate focus on Victor Scerri’s case. Deep down in my heart I’m an environmentalist. I remember clearly the horror on my parents’ face when I joined Alternattiva Demokratika in its formative years and I spent my first students’ stipend to buy Aleppo pines to plant them in my family’s land in Wied il-Ghasel.
And yet, I’m no fan of Bugeja’s ramblers’ rambling. Now I’m grown up and tasted a bit of the world’s evil. I’m not naive. I’ve realised that many a time there are hidden agendas. Many people hate MEPA not because they love carob trees or they are worried seeing fresh water crabs losing their habitat. They hate MEPA because Mr X was granted a permit while Mr Y was denied. It is pure jealousy.
I myself now have earned some money and bought six tumoli of unspoilt, virgin land in Wied il-Ghasel. It is the investment of my life and I love my land which is ‘libera’ and ‘franka’ with no countryside lanes crossing it... so ramblers, please don’t come rambling in it. There is one very large room in it with xorok tal-qasba. It needs some dire repair. I’m sure that if I were a politician (especially a Nationalist), chaps like Lino Bugeja and others would raise all the fury of hell to block me and humiliate me. I’m no saint but I can identify a hypocrite.
