English speaking ambassadors to give series of talks

A series of monthly talks are being delivered by the English-speaking Ambassadors and High Commissioners on the island.

In line with the high standard of public talks being set by the English-Speaking Union of Malta, following the talks by Professor David Crystal and Professor Alan Lee Williams, a series of monthly talks are being delivered by the English-speaking Ambassadors resident in Malta: the British High Commissioner, the Irish Ambassador, the Ambassador of the United States of America and the Australian High Commissioner.

The subject and theme of the talks for all the High Commissioners and Ambassadors will be the same: ‘Ethnic, Cultural and Linguistic Pluralism in an English-Speaking Nation’. But each Ambassador or High Commissioner will bring to the talk his and her own national perspective, history and cultural experience, by examining what the four nations have in common as liberal democracies and how each in their own way embraces multiculturalism, pluralism and diversity as the core to their own national concept.

The talks should provide a fascinating insight into how four nations, having English as their common link, have developed historically from common roots to become the great, diverse and advanced nations that they are today and how pluralism in their countries thrives.

The first talk will be delivered by Louise Stanton, the British High Commissioner, at the St James Cavalier Music Room, on Wednesday, 9 March, commencing at 18:00. The public is requested to be seated by 17:45.

This will be followed by Jim Hennessy, the Irish Ambassador, on Thursday, 14 April. Douglas Kmiec, the United States Ambassador will follow on Thursday, 19 May. And, finally, Anne Quinane, the Australian High Commissioner, will speak on Thursday, 16 June.
