Tom Cruise is in Malta for a brief visit, scouting locations for the remake of the popular Mummy movies. Universal is rumoured to have picked Malta as at least one of its locations ahead of its 2017 release.

The movie, originally scheduled for March 24, 2017, will now open on June 9 of that year.

The action-adventure will star Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), and will be directed by Alex Kurtzman from a screenplay penned by Prometheus scribe Jon Spaihts.

Kurtzman will produce the project, along with Chris Morgan and Sean Daniel, with Bobby Cohen acting as executive producer.

The iconic Boris Karloff/Peter Cushing film cemented The Mummy as a horror classic back in 1932, and director Stephen Sommers resurrected the franchise as a summer popcorn flick in 1999 - spawning two sequels and a spinoff movie, The Scorpion King.
