The government has announced a substantial increase in the cash rebates to filmmakers today,  who will now have the opportunity to benefit from a 25% cash rebate with an additional 2% if they feature Maltese cultural elements. This is a 5% increase over the previous rates.

The new incentive scheme is subject to State Aid approval. The Minister responsible for the Film Industry Manuel Mallia, who presided the press conference, stated that Government wants to consolidate its efforts to continue making Malta an attractive and viable location. The rebates extend to international TV series and Transmedia and post-production is now an eligible cost up to €150,000 per project.

Mallia reiterated that Government wants to further develop the local film industry to ensure that the island offers the right tools and expertise for the industry to flourish.

The increase in the cash rebates, the launch of the co-production equity fund and the revamping of the film fund to support the local talent are a clear proof of Government’s vision for the industry.

The press conference was also addressed by Film Commissioner Engelbert Grech who remarked that the cash rebate system given to qualifying productions will make Malta even more cost effective and will provide producers with more value for their money.

He stated that Malta’s great weather, long hours of day light and the island’s distinctive locations with a film history dating back to 1925 also prove to be strong assets that make Malta an attractive choice to both big budget studio productions as well as independent productions, from virtually all over the world.

During the press conference the Film Commission presented it's new logo as part of a re-branding exercise. A new comprehensive industry guide was also launched, showcasing Malta’s benefits for the industry together with data and significant testimonials from producers who have filmed in Malta. The Film Commission will now start an international marketing campaign to promote Malta's Film Industry.

Described as Mediterranean’s mini Hollywood by the London Times, Malta, has a proven track record showing that the island has all it takes to serve as a European centre for film making.
