Malta’s new film commissioner will be Johann Grech, who is replacing outgoing commissioner Engelbert Grech.

Johann Grech, a former official in the Office of the Prime Minister, said he will expand an already growing industry in the Maltese islands.

He will be responsible for the administration of the organisation that supports local film industries as well as the administration of foreign productions to Malta.

The new film commissioner vowed to attract new companies and promote Malta’s resources to emerging film industries, mainly China and India. “My message to the global film industry is a simple one: Malta is a great film-set in itself. Our islands offer a world of opportunity. And we can make it happen for your story.”

Johann Grech also thanked his predecessor Engelbert Grech, for his success that has seen more than 50 productions using Malta for their work.

Johann Grech said his previous role as head of government marketing would help him promote the islands’ potential use for local and foreign productions. “We don’t just offer attractive financing incentives but we are hands-on, giving all the support filmmakers need and Malta is a great place to call home during the months of production.”
