No Eurovision comeback for Ira

2002 Eurovision runner-up denies rumours that she could be Malta’s first Eurovision ‘wildcard’.

Ira Losco has put to bed any lingering rumours that she could represent Malta at the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest in Austria, 13 years after narrowly finishing second behind Latvia with her song ‘7th Wonder’.

“I thought about it and [Eurovision] didn’t feel like something I wanted to pursue this year,” Losco said in a Facebook post on Sunday. “I hope we can now put all the gossip to rest and wish all the 48 contestants the best of luck.”

“I am currently in the writing stage of another album and still have two more singles and music videos to release from ‘The Fire’,” Losco said.

Although the 48 finalists for the Malta Eurovision Song Contest were confirmed on Saturday, rumours spread that PBS- the ESC organisers- were set to finally make use of their ‘wildcard’ on Losco. According to regulations, PBS can award one singer with a wildcard. Despite being in place for the past three years, PBS have never made use of it and rumours spreading among ESC circles were that Losco ‘will be the first one to be given such a privilege’.

On 25 September, Losco teased her fans with the possibility of a Eurovision comeback. “In 2002, I was fortunate enough to finish 2nd place for Malta with just 12 points away from a win. What are your thoughts if I had to return to Eurovision with a song I wrote?” she asked her Facebook fans. Over 2000 people responded, with reactions split between people yearning for a comeback and others warning her that a comeback would signal a step-down in her career.
