Christina Grimmie, a singer who had starred on the US television programme The Voice, has died after being shot at a concert venue in Orlando, Florida.

Florida police say that a man opened fire on the 22-year-old singer at around 22:45 local time on Friday while she was signing autographs at the Plaza Live. The assailant – who was tackled by Grimmie’s brother – then shot and killed himself.

“With deep regret, we have confirmed Christina Grimmie, @TheRealGrimmie has died from her injuries,” the Orlando Police Department wrote in a tweet.

Grimmie's publicist Heather Walsh said that “it is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord."

The attacker, whose name has not been released, had two guns on him. Police investigations are underway.

Grimmie, a New Jersey native, finished in third place during season six of The Voice in 2014.
