Violinist Carmine Lauri joins Malta Philharmonic Orchestra for classical music concert

Internationally-acclaimed Maltese violinist Carmine Lauri will be coming to Malta this week to perform in a concert featuring Russian classical music this week.

Lauri will be performing Alexander Glazunov’s Violin Concerto in A minor in the second concert of the MPO’s Russian Masters series.

A public performance of this concert, which is being organised by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, will be held on Friday 7 April at the Teatru Manoel.

Based in the UK since earning a scholarship to London’s Royal Academy of Music at the age of 17, Lauri is co-leader of the prestigious London Symphony Orchestra.

Lauri regularly performs with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, either as a guest orchestra leader or as a soloist. Last December, he played solo violin when the orchestra performed Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis in Rome’s Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, and in February, led the orchestra in the first Russian Masters concert.

This week’s concert will also see the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of its resident conductor Michael Laus, perform Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Festival Overture, which is based on a collection of old Russian liturgical chants known as the Obikhod, as well as Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony, which utilises three Ukrainian folk songs to great effect.
