Malta's Destiny Chukunyere left the audience roaring yesterday on the Britain's got Talent semi-final with her rendition of Aretha Franklin’s Respect, but her performance was not enough to see her through to the finals.

Following her performance, judge David Williams gave the singer a standing ovation, saying she had “a God given talent.”

“That was absolutely incredible. To take on a song that huge and conquer it incredible,” Williams said.

“It is your destiny, Destiny, to be a star,” he added, drawing a pun on the singer’s name.

Fellow panel member Alesha Dixon called Destiny’s performance “effortless”, praising her for her “soul and confidence”.

Amanda Holden also told Destiny "you were born to do this", noting that Destiny “turns into a powerhouse on stage.”

However, notoriously difficult to please judge Simon Cowell, claiming that he would put Destiny on a West-End show “tomorrow, to jump-start your [Destiny’s] carrer”, said he would have preferred to see a bit more variety in Destiny’s choice of song.

Destiny  through to the semi-finals with a cover of Think, also by Aretha Franklin, getting the seal of approval by all four judges.
