Masquerade students go ‘cloud busting’

For the second time, Masquerade Theatre Arts School is taking part in the National Theatre Connections Youth Theatre Festival, in conjunction with the National Theatre, London.

Masquerade is one of the only eight international companies to be selected to take part in this international youth theatre project.

10 thrilling new plays for young people were commissioned by the National Theatre to be performed by 200 UK theatre youth groups. Cloud Busting, written by Helen Blakeman and adapted from the novel by Malorie Blackman was chosen by Masquerade. For the past three months, 16 passionate and committed students aged 13 to 15 have been working on this play.

“This is a great opportunity for Masquerade students to stage a brand new play, written for teenage actors. The cast have been rehearsing intensively and contributing towards creating all aspects of the performance,” said Anthony Bezzina, Masquerade Theatre Arts School director.

Cloud Busting follows the life of teenager Sam, who is expecting to experience just another ordinary day – but it all changes when he is asked by his school teacher to write a poem about someone they care about.

Sam decides to write about his friend Davey, but he does not want anyone knowing about their friendship. Davey is considered by many of his peers to be different, as he likes dancing and looks at the world in a different way to everybody else. One day the school bullies take it a step too far and Sam’s friendship is put to the test.
