V18 chairman Jason Micallef has announced that Dr Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci has been appointed new artistic director for the regeneration of Strait Street.

Micallef said that the street had been abandoned for far too long and that a new director had been appointed because of the extent of its regenaration project.

"The street has a very prominent history and we felt that a holistic regeneration project should respect the history while at the same time boosting the local economy and culture scene," Micallef said, referring to the way the Foundation had been encouraging private companies to open various entertainment establishments in the area.

"Our key focus will be marrying the tradition of the street with the contemporary scene," said Schembri Bonaci.

He added that plans would aim to regenerate the street as a cultural and artistic hub.
