Member of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola and the Malta Business Bureau have agreed to collaborate.

“Too often I hear business complain that the EU-decision making process is too far away from their everyday reality and I believe that we can help address this through continuous dialogue,” Metsola said. “I want to start a more open and continuous dialogue with Maltese businesses so that I will be able to take their concerns on EU law into consideration.”

In the European Parliament, Metsola is a member of the Internal Market and Consumer Affairs committee. This committee is in charge of reducing barriers to economic trade and simplifying laws to enhance competitiveness across Europe.

“We need to find the right balance between safeguarding consumer rights and not increasing unnecessary bureaucracy or unfair burdens on small business,” Metsola added. “Malta’s businesses have a lot to contribute on an EU level.”

Metsola is also a member of the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs committee, which is in charge of data protection and privacy.

MBB CEO Joe Tanti said that the proposed EU Data Protection package would mean that businesses would be forced to employ someone to deal with data protection, which could place an ‘unreasonable financial burden’ on smaller business.

“We cannot treat multi-national conglomerates with the same glove we would to a small or medium enterprise employing a small number people,” Metsola said.
