Decrease in persons registering for work

In August, the number of persons registering for work stood at 6,698 compared to 7,457 in the corresponding month last year.

Data provided by the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC) for August indicate a decrease of 732 persons registering under Part I and a decline of 27 persons among those registering under Part II of the unemployment register, when compared to the corresponding month last year.

Decreases in registered unemployment were recorded among all age-groups, with the most significant being recorded among registrants aged 45 and over (-189 registrants).

When compared to August last year, an increase of 96 persons was recorded among those who had been registering for employment for at least one year.

On the other hand, the number of persons who had been registering for less than 21 weeks declined by 40. The number of disabled persons registering for work decreased by 56 to 464. Males accounted for 83.6 per cent of the total number of registrants with a disability.

The largest share of men on the register sought occupations as crafts and related trade workers, whereas women mostly sought occupations as technicians and associate professionals.

The registered unemployed rate in April stood at 4.3 per cent of the labour supply, (excluding part-time employment) and varied from 5.1 per cent among men to 2.9 per cent among women.
