Malta's trade balance down by €0.4 billion in a year

Malta’s trade balance between January-August 2014 fell from -€1.3 billion to -€1.7 billion when compared with the corresponding period last year

Malta’s trade balance in the first eight months of this year fell from -€1.3 billion to -€1.7 billion when compared with the corresponding period last year, Eurostat figures show.

Malta’s total export sales between January and August 2014 fell from €1.9 billion to €1.4 billion when compared with the corresponding period in 2013. This is a growth decrease of 27%, the highest percentage decrease out of all the 28 EU member states. Eurostat had given similar export statistics figures for Malta for the period between January and July 2014.

Meanwhile, Malta’s imports dropped by €0.1 billion to €3.1 billion between January and August 2014 when compared with the same period last year. Earlier Eurostat figures showed that Malta’s imports had dropped by €0.2 billion between January and July 2014 when compared with the corresponding period last year.
