Foreign direct investment up by €9.2 billion in 2015

The stock position of foreign direct investment in Malta as at the end of December 2015 stood at €152.3 billion, while direct investment abroad amounted to €61.6 billion

Foreign direct investment in Malta was estimated to be €152.3 billion by the end of 2015, an increase of €9.2 billion over the corresponding month the year before.

Financial and insurance activities contributed to 97.9% the total foreign direct investment, amounting to €149.0 billion.

During 2015, there was a net increase of €4.1 billion in FDI, compared to an increase of €8.4 billion in 2014. This increase in FDI flows was mainly driven by increases registered under other capital.

As for flows classified by economic activity, the largest increase of FDI was registered in financial and insurance activities by €3.7 billion in 2015.

As for direct investment flows abroad, 2015 saw a decrease of €4.7 billion, compared to an increase of €1.8 billion during the previous year. This was mainly the result of decreases in claims on direct investors of €5.6 billion.

In terms of stock position, as at December 2015 direct investment abroad by resident entities was recorded at €61.6 billion. Entities offering financial and insurance activities accounted for 99.4% of the total direct investment abroad.
