Malta registers almost 200,000 tourist trips in September

The number of visitors coming to Malta in September of this year were estimated at 208,321, marking an increase of 7.3% when compared to the same period in 2015.

Of these, 180,734 trips were carried out for holiday purposes, while a further 11,509 were undertaken for business purposes.

Compared to September 2015, inbound tourists from EU member states went up by 8.2% to 175,793, the majority of which were aged between 25 and 44, followed by those within the 45-64 age bracket.

In a similar comparison, total nights spent went up by 1.6%, amounting to 1,634,155 nights. The largest share of guest nights, meaning 56%, was spent in collective accommodation establishments.

Total tourist expenditure was estimated at €198.4 million, translating into an increase of 1.3% over the corresponding month of 2015.

January-September 2016

Taking into consideration the period between January and September of this year, inbound tourist trips amounted to 1,515,439, which is an increase of 8.2% over the same period in 2015. Total nights spent by inbound tourists went up by 5.1%, reaching almost 11.8 million nights.

Total tourism expenditure in the first three quarters of the year was estimated at €1,355.3 million, 3.2% higher than that recorded for 2015. However, total expenditure per capita stood at €894, a decrease of 4.6% when compared to 2015.
