Shrieking and waking

At last! The operetta of the deputy leader of the Labour party Michael Falzon: shrieking away on the Fosos in Floriana, rising to a falsetto and then waving his hands like a hysterical barmaid on the sinking Titanic. The scene has hit the strategy group in the Nationalist party machine like a tornado. And they have decided to act.
They have finally decided to lift their undeclared censorship over their journalists, and allow them to televise clips of the deputy leader of the Labour party being what he really is: a load of hot air.
So finally someone has woken up after having tried for months to give the impression that Michael Falzon is a soft spoken man and a better alternative to Alfred Sant. Too late, chums.
But the PN have smaller fish to fry. In what is considered to be a calculated operation to decimate any reasonable electoral threat, the PN machine has decided to continue hitting out at AD and not say a word at AN.
Again, just yesterday night Simon Busuttil once again tried his hand at AD bashing and informed us that a vote for AD would be a waste. Next time someone comes up with a Nobel prize for democratic credentials, please do not forget to nominate Simon. Yes, Simon the man from Europe. Mark my words: one day Simon will show his true colours.
But what was more austere is that he did not have one word of criticism for Josie’s party. Not one word. Not one word for this former Nationalist militant and MP.
It was not because he does not believe they should be rapped on the knuckles, but simply because Mr Joe Saliba thinks that the best policy is to ignore Josie and paint AD as the infidel.
I am sick and tired of all this demonisation.
I had thousands of fans booked to run away with me on 8 March for a feast of “cozze” and “vongole” in Siracusa. I have told them that I am housebound because of a more pressing personal issue; but many have told me that they are so annoyed by these dirty tactics that they are staying home to cast their vote .
Just look at the blogs and see what people are saying to the PN’s heavy handedness.

The GWPBN and the PNGWAT
So Joe Saliba is not quite sure whether the damage caused to Harry Vassallo’s property was perpetrated by Nationalists. Harry Vassallo’s property was damaged minutes after a mass meeting held by the PN in Sliema.
So it must have been the GWPBN and the PNGWAT.
Saliba, in an answer to this newspaper, condemned the culprits but when quizzed about controlling naughty Nationalists who could stir trouble, he answered: “... it could have been committed by somebody else on purpose.”
By the way, the GWPBN is a special unit created by the Greens; it stands for Greens Who Pretend To Be Nationalists. They were specially organised to organise fake attacks on Greens, and then blame it on the Nationalists.
As if it is impossible to imagine that out of the thousands of Nationalist supporters – out of all those in who make up what we have now termed PN groupies – none are capable of becoming slightly mischievous.
With Joe’s reasoning, we should take it that the alleged bomb threat to DCG could easily have been concocted… not by not some deviant Labourite, but by Nationalists, probably members of the PNGWAT.
By the way the PNGWAT are the “PN Groupies Who Attack Themselves.”
Well, it is a very strange world, made stranger by this habit of attacking oneself, maiming oneself, reporting threats. It all seems to have gotten a little bit out of hand.
I remember way back in the good old days of David Casa when the IVA office in a little well-lit street in Gzira was attacked.
The grand attack was to the door knobs (Euro signs), which were bent, and a little stone carefully thrown at a small balcony window.
Before the IVA committee (of which I was then a member) had chance to meet, Mr Casa was quick to issue a press release condemning the attack.
I was not quite sure what to say. But I am sure that the little stone must have been thrown by a group of inebriated ballerinas, or better still the garden gnomes from the Gzira gardens across the road.
But then, who am I not to believe that it was probably a carefully planned terrorist attack by the CNI?
Can we stop this crap please, NOW!

Crappy
And if crap was not enough to worry about. We now know that what is good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander.
DJ Ruby is one of those DJs that I would probably find as distasteful as smoked herring, but for those with short memories, it has to be said that years back when the unfortunate DJ was asked to play at a PN gathering, the MLP revealed that the poor DJ had a conviction over drug possession.
Hmm. Now I find out that DJ Ruby will now be playing for the MLP in one of those Viva l-Lejber concerts.
I guess it has got to do with the Labour’s new policy of erasing memory and rejuvenating itself.
So anyone who thinks I am being a pain in the ass, please note that it is very intentional exercise.

Luxol, here we come
The decision to organise the last mass meeting at Luxol by the MLP is indeed a very stupid one.
The Labour consultant who came up with the idea of ending the campaign in Nationalist blue territory should be sent to sleep with Obama’s consultant for at least a week.
The worst nightmare for any Nationalist, even those who may be thinking of voting Labour, is to see a carcade of frantic and very loud Labourites with red flags banging and screaming in the same horrible manner Michael Falzon was screeching and waving at the Fosos on Sunday.
Well thank God, Phil Noble is not around.

Jo Said, once again
Now back to the Greens. I hear that Jo Said and his wife have joined the Greens.
Great news, that is, if you believe that Jo Said is an asset to your political platform. Do the Greens really think they have made a great acquisition to their regiment? But is he really an asset?
This Said has turned out to be like that albatross that turns up at your boat wailing doomsday.
But the stark truth is that Jo Said is just another disgruntled Nationalist, nothing more, nothing less.
And for both the AD or the MLP to take advantage of Jo Said is dangerous when one looks at the history of turncoats in the last elections.

I think that this election campaign is absolutaley rubbish...Both tv/radio stations , all you see/hear ,the two parties quarriling about things which dont make sense.. DNA VS OWE OWU!!!...How can you decide

Saviour, i think Joe Said is a right stuck up bastard who is asking for trouble if he doesnt shut his arrogant mouth.

All these predictions about who will or won't win the election. We'll just have to wait and see. Whoever wins, whether I/we support them or not, will be leading the country for the next few years and we will all have to accept it. To be completely honest I don't think Labour will destroy the country although I prefer the Nationalists. After a few months it will make no difference, life will go on as normal and I trust whoever wins will respect human rights and deal with the problems facing the country in the best way they can. I hope there will be no revenge missions or character assasinations against individuals who have spoken out against the government of the day (and this could include me). Constuctive criticism can persuade politicians to act. Personal criticism is not on, such as the mention of Sant's wig. So what if he wears one, if it makes him feel more comfortable what harm is there?

It's really funny, we are being begged to give Lawrence a second chance because so that he will learn from his own mistakes but we cannot do the same to Alfred who had only 22 months to prove himself!

Saviour, I don't agree with you when you say that Swieqi residents are irked because Labour is going to organise a meeting at Luxol. I should think that we are more irked by the way our village has been turned into a construction site during these last years. To add insult to injury I received a letter from George Pullicino informing me that this construction has been going on to enhance my property value. Go tell it to the marines!

Hi Saviour

Folowwing the current campaigning I totally agree with your forecasts. Prima Facia it appears the country needs a change, however I have an appeal to all those who feel injured by their party in goverment to date. Please give Lawrence Gonzi a second term, I am sure he has learnt enough from his first term and will definetely not repeat the corruption tollerance. My dream is for Lawrence Gonzi to win this election and have a fresh new cabinet. Thanks.

02/27/08 1:51 AM,
Has anyone of those who are critising the labour simply because of where their final mass meeting will be held, has got a bit of an idea that these places are decided by polls? And anyway, the day after the election when the results are out, people will go all over Malta to celebrate and no can stop them and tell them to which places they can or can't go. It's a use less argument..sorry.

02/27/08 1:46 AM,
A minority coalition you mean? one seat has all the power? What democracy is this?

02/27/08 1:29 AM,
I think that Labour will win the general elections now, and believe me a radical change is needed now, to stop the corruption. Yet I think that the best and most noble ideas presented are of Alternativa Demokratika. So let's hope for a coalition.

I do not think that Labour will win anything. In fact I think PN will either win or lose. Win, because people will admit that there is substantial wealth generation, guranteed democracy, freedom of speech, solid education, valid work opportunities, international respect etc etc. Lose, because some peole might consider their possible personal injustice to be greater then the national benefit. In any case, I do not want to be arrogant and nag about how selfishly irresponsible people can be when they do not get what they think is theirs (and which in fact is not)

02/26/08 11:24 PM, Stephanie Abood
I think Labour are going to win big this time round. The problem with the Nationalists is thier sheer arrogance. As the Maltese saying goes 'Se Jahsdu dak li zerghu'. They will get what they deserve... when in power people tend to forget that time flies and the time to face the electorate will come. Does any body really think that the people will vote in the best interest of the country and not their own? Spell that to someone who has suffered an injustice in the past years and you 'll see... You see we all have two ears and one mouth perhaps one should assume that we need to listen more and talk less.

02/26/08 1:42 PM,
The PN's panic attacks on what AD represents (they cannot attack AD's valid proposals), notwithstanding the MLPN's attempt to stangle AD with the 16% national quota - may now start backfiring....
As to Mr. Said, I think he's entitled to walk in and out any public meeting......

02/26/08 1:19 PM, Dion Borg
If the MLP team can get something obvious like this (Luxol mtg) so wrong - it does them little credit in how they will handle more serious national issues.
However a quick rethink may be on the cards.....unless i have missed something.

02/26/08 12:09 PM, Tonio Privitelli
It's incredible how stupid the MLP can be - they really are unfit to run the country. The worst possible strategy for them, if they want the PN to lose votes, is make a sorry exhibition of themselves in exactly the place where the PN are most likely to lose votes. A noisy and disruptive invasion of Swieqi by Labour supporters on the eve of the election is the ONLY thing guaranteed to bring out the Swieqi population in droves to vote PN.

02/26/08 11:33 AM, Phillip Micallef
Dear Mr Balzan, I quite agree with you about why the Nationalist party are not criticising AN. Why is this? They are concentration on AD but the real villans are AN. Could it be that in their hearts they agree with AN policies about migrants? They should come clean with the Maltese public and tell us exactly where they stand on this issue. The front page story today was shocking in that no one is speaking out against AN (except you and me). Not even the church-and they should really be speaking out more against them as their policies go against Christian teachings and they claim to be a 'Catholic' party. How much more proof do the public need before they condemn AN?
Another strand of the migration issue is the amount of Eastern Europeans from non EU countries working in the mulitude of strip clubs that have sprung up over the last couple of years. I'm no saint and I have nothing against these clubs but at least the strippers should have a work permit or come from EU countries. Could it be that the owners of these clubs were paying off the authorities not to take action against them?

Dear Saviour

Many times I share your views especially since you are quite liberal & progressive.

The problem in Malta is that unfortunatley the PN has dominated the last 21 years & it is quite difficult for a liberal agenda to make inroads in Malta.

The Maltese is a very conservative society & very much anti liberal & progressive.

Maybe those of us who share liberal & progressive ideas should forget about Malta & try to move to progressive countries such as Holland, Switzerland, Scandinavianan countires and other similar countries.

Are you going to hold the last survey next Sunday or not?

REGARDS

02/26/08 6:08 AM,
And what will the problem be with that ??? Lots of people continue school

02/26/08 6:02 AM, vincent busuttil
Can someone make this clear regarding reception/repeat class.
Yesterday G. Sapiano asked A. Sant:
"will reception class be imposed on private schools" answer was "no". So if some schools will not have and others do we would have students terminating secondary school 16 while other at 17.

02/26/08 5:22 AM,
Why should it be a problem that compulsory school ends at the age of 17?
I would have thought that if parents want the best for their children they would encourage them to further their education, either by going into Junior College, MCast, or any other educational establishment that is on offer.
If they do not intend to do so, and will start working at 17, they'll definately be able to make up for the "lost year" now that pension age has risen to 65.
If some primary school teachers really believe a reception class is needed why all the fuss...I think they would know best.
I believe that all the fuss is being instigated for partisan/political reasons as this proposal does not really have any weighting on the well-being of the Maltese Islands. Neither is it being proposed as some kind of deliberate evil act towards children and teachers.

02/26/08 4:31 AM, Lucy
These mass meetings are really a clowning around time for all those who have big problems in their lives. Last sunday i sadly was present both in Valletta and Sliema and the scenes were clearly out of (a) a comedy, (b) a horror movie... drunk, disorderly, pissing on walls, puking, what a beautiful sight and i feel so secure in putting my vote in the two parties' hands... lovely. What sad supporters...

02/26/08 3:56 AM, MARK DEPASQUALE
Hi,
On which date are you going to issue your next survey result?

Regards.

Mark

02/26/08 3:26 AM, vincent busuttil
with regards to reception/repeater class:
G. Spiana question: Will it be inposed on private schools?
A.Sant answer: No.
My conclusion, so if it goes ahead we would have children who fish secondary school at 16 and other at 17.

02/26/08 2:49 AM,

02/26/08 2:05 AM, A.Farrugia
Who decided to organise the last meeting at Luxol ?? Doesn't it get decided by polls ???
