"One has to keep in mind that after the divorce referendum, the disaster in the public transport reform and instances where the Speaker had to cast his vote to save government, new elections would have been the logical consequence," Piski says.
He says that in the midst of an international economic crisis, a country needs a strong government in order to be able to take the right decisions. But Malta does not have that kind of government.
I ask him if he thinks the Nationalist Party will be able to hold on to office until the end of its mandate, but replies that this would not be beneficial for the country.
"I really hope they will not. I cannot imagine government passing major legislation through Parliament by just relying on the Speaker's vote. It would just cause greater harm to itself and the country, and it would clearly prove that only power matters to to those who hold it," Piski says.
