Convict makes new allegations of beating by police inspector

A suspended police inspector is facing new allegations of brutal treatment of a suspect while in police custody.

Suspended Police Inspector Jeffrey Cilia

Inspector Jeffrey Cilia was suspended from duty last December following his arraignment for allegedly assaulting three brothers in Paceville.

The new allegations were made by inmate Joseph Cini, 44, known as Il-Pele who claims to have been beaten by Inspector Cilia soon after he had arrested him and took him to the St. Julian's Police station in 2008.

Cini made the claim through his lawyer Renzo Porsella Flores, who is asked the court to summon Superintendent Stephen Gatt to confirm that he had arraigned Jeffrey Cilia over aggression in a separate case.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke turned down the request, saying the charges had nothing to do with this. The court also denied a request by Cini to add to the testimony he already gave in November.
