Updated | 11 arraigned over Santa Marija fracas in Gozo

Five men from Xaghra, and another six men from Gozo are granted bail following arraignment over fracas on Tuesday, in which a number of persons were injured following a fight in a band club.

The 11 men were arraigned in the Gozo court.

Another six men from Gozo, ranging between the ages of 17 and 30 years, were arraigned in court this morning after being accused of grievously injuring another person as well lightly injuring four persons on Tuesday evening.

Emanuel Cini, 30 from Zebbug in Gozo, Shaun-Pierre Cassar, 25 from Kercem, Christian Sultana, 22 from Kercem, Jason Cassar, 22 from Kercem, Daniel Agius, 21 from Kercem, Josmike Sultana, 19, and another 17-year-old man pleaded not guilty to grievously injuring three people, slightly injuring four, threatening and assaulting people and breaching the public peace.

The six were granted bail this afternoon against a personal guarantee of €2,000. 

Another five men, also accused of gravely injuring three persons in Gozo on Tuesday, were granted bail on Friday morning against a personal guarantee of €2,000 each.

The police said the five men are being accused for their involvement in a fight inside the Leone Philharmonic Society in Rabat, Gozo.

Anthony Sultana, 23; Marvic Galea, 18; Mark Xiberras' 18; Geordie Muscat, 18; and a 15-year-old man, all hailing from Xaghra, pleaded not guilty to grievously injuring three people, slightly injuring four, threatening and assaulting seven people and breaching the public peace.

This issue was not about the feast. It was a fight that took place among youths and others. For the media to misrepesent the story is very unbecoming because it is sensationalism and it creates hate.

These disorderly behaviour is becoming frequent. The judiciary have to be tough because if they don't then this unacceptable behaviour becomes popular at the detriment of the society.

About a decade and a half ago I was in Court when supporters of "ta'-Istilla" and "ta' L-Ajkla" from Luqa were arraigned before the Magistrate after a feast brawl at their village. They came in laughing and joking, but when the Magistrate started handing down prison sentences the majority of them turned pale and had to be helped to stand. Of course they appealed and the prison sentences were waived but as the Magistrate was reading the sentences.......it was a sight.
