Seventeen local councils are being brought together by GreenPak Cooperative Society in a campaign to collect used clothes for recycling.

The funds generated from this event will go towards the Nature Trust’s Wildlife Rescue Unit to rehabilitate hedgehogs.

The clothes recycling campaign has become a regular event in GreenPak’s calendar, providing the community with an environmentally sustainable way of disposing of used (but still in good condition) clothes, shoes, belts and handbags.

This time round, GreenPak will be forwarding the proceeds of this recycling effort to financially support the rehab and nurturing programme of Maltese hedgehogs being carried out so diligently by Nature Trust Malta.

During this year alone, Nature Trust Wildlife Rescue Unit have saved over 120 hedgehogs, most of which have been successfully rehabilitated and released back into the natural habitat. Needless to say, all Nature Trust Malta Wildlife Rehab volunteers are covered by a MEPA permit to handle protected fauna in Malta.

“GreenPak is proud to link-up with Nature Trust and help protect our environment,” said Ing. Mario Schembri, CEO of GreenPak Coop Society. “Barely used clothes are discarded daily amounting to tonnes of textiles being landfilled each year. Through this recycling campaign, not only is GreenPak offering the chance to help reduce waste but is also actively providing support to rehabilitate Malta’s wildlife.”

The campaign is being well received by residents and has so far yielded in excess of four tonnes of used clothes and other related accessories.

Whilst thanking GreenPak for this initiative, Executive President of Nature Trust Malta Mr Vince Attard said: “The raw material production and manufacturing of new clothes is a resource and energy intensive process. Every item of clothing saved represents a benefit for the planet. GreenPak’s collection and recycling campaign is a leading example of how giving clothes a second ‘life’ not only reduces pressure on landfills, but also conserves resources.”

Local councils participating in the clothes collection campaign are: Santa Venera, San Ġwann, Mosta, Msida, Kirkop, Għaxaq, iż-Żurrieq, Qrendi, Lija, Santa Luċija, Pembroke, Valletta, Naxxar, Qormi, Mqabba, Xagħra and Sannat.

GreenPak, a MEPA authorised scheme, is the largest waste recovery scheme in Malta.
