Nurses from Karin Grech Hospital and Gozo General Hospital are currently receiving specialized training at the Newton Wellesley Hospital and Spaulding Rehabilitation Centre in Boston, USA.

The exchange follows the signing of an agreement last November, between Partners HealthCare International and Vitals Global Healthcare (VGH) – the company awarded a service concession from the government for the management and operation of Karin Grech Hospital, Gozo General Hospital and St Luke’s hospital. The agreement was signed with the intention of enhancing health care services and clinical education in Malta.

The group of nurses includes, Chief Nursing Managers from the two hospitals as well as four other nurses.

Vitals Global Healthcare said that during their stay in Boston the nurses will familiarise themselves with methods used within the Partners Healthcare network of hospitals, paying special attention to the nursing evaluation process.

Moreover, the company said that they will also be given insights on how credentialing is done there, on communication strategies between staff and patients, on staff to patient ratios, and on quality and patient safety reporting.

“It is very important for members of our staff to continue to interact and observe how other highly rated institutions not only provide their care, but work to improve quality and patient safety as well as to monitor critical issues related to credentialing and staffing ratios. It is important that staff in the various hospital departments have such opportunities to improve their professional skills”, said VGH-Karin Grech/SLH CEO Dr. Stephen Zammit.

Over the coming months, additional training sessions will be organised for VGH staff, in collaboration with Partners HealthCare International.
