Malta has been ranked as the 17th best place in the world to live for expatriates, according to a recent survey.

The survey, carried out by expat social network InterNations, asked 50 of its users in every country in the world to rate factors in their country such as happiness, peacefulness, health and safety, and political stability.

Singapore ranked first, closely followed by Ecuador, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, and Spain.

Malta ranked fourth in the health, safety and well-being category – behind only Austria, Japan, and Portugal.

The leisure options available to expats in Malta was ranked 11th in the world and their personal happiness 10th.

However, the island was denied a position higher up the list thanks to its poor rating in transport and travel – only managing to notch up 39th place in that particular index.
