Malta International Airport will now be connecting to its second Romanian city, Cluj-Napoca, after a new summer flight was launched yesterday evening.

Low-cost airline Wizz Air will be operating the one-and-a-half hour flights to the second most populous city in Romania every Wednesday and Sunday.

The locations marks the second new summer connection, after Air Malta announced last Friday that it was starting a scheduled service to Tel Aviv, Israel, on Sunday.

The new Romanian route marks Malta International Airport’s first connection to the Transylvania region, as Malta was previously only connected to Romania through its capital, Bucharest – also via Wizz Air.

The first passengers from Cluj-Napoca were given a special welcome by hosts donning the traditional Maltese costume and treated to a cake-cutting ceremony.

Cluj-Napoca is surrounded by the Carpathian mountains, and sought for its scenic landscapes and medieval towns. Points of interest for travellers to the city include the National Art Museum housing a collection of weapons and art dating back to the Middle Ages, and the National Museum of Transylvanian History, showcasing both temporary and permanent exhibitions.
